2015 - Third Annual Conference

On April 22 - 24, 2015 we held our third annual, statewide, Impact After School Conference at the Ramada Conference Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Approximately 160 afterschool professionals were in attendance, along with over 50 individual presenters and 18 exhibitors (partner organizations)! The Impact After School Conference is supported by the Iowa Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Center’s Grant, the Iowa Afterschool Alliance and the national Noyce Foundation.

We kicked off the conference with a day-long STEM pre-conference, featuring a national STEM expert, Maryann Stimmer, who is the Owner and Founder of STEMeducators. Ms. Stimmer was also recently recognized by the NAA as one of the “Most Influential in STEM” in the AfterSchool Today Spring 2015 publication. Then, the Impact conference sessions began on the morning of April 23, with plenty of workshops and topic areas to choose from, featuring 4 conference sessions per block for an overall 28 breakout sessions over the course of two days. The morning Keynote on Thursday, April 23, was Joanna Faber, Parent/Teacher Educator at Faber/Mazlish Workshops from New York. Faber shared communication principals that improve relationships with children of all ages through a combination of storytelling and audience interaction. The luncheon included both a student speaker who shared the impact of out-of-school time programs on her life, and an immersive STEM activity by Debby Venable, Owner of Mud Pie Science in Oklahoma. We ended the conference on a note of resilience with Iowa ACEs discussion on the prevention and mitigation of the impact of childhood adversity and the important role that out-of-school time providers play in supporting youth.

Following the closing plenary, we presented awards to the 2015 Afterschool Champions winners. For more information about this year’s winners, click here. Finally, the post-conference offered a deep-dive into the communication principles and strategies shared by our Keynote, Joanna Faber. Overall, it was a highly successful three days and an opportunity for afterschool professionals in the state to network and build their knowledge base by sharing best practices!
